<br />
<div style="text-align: right;">
"Only when you dream, you can do it. "<br />
Dirubhai Ambani.</div>
<br />
Dreams possess power. ‘It inspires man like anything. It stretches out one’s internal self-image and maximize one’s performance. It transcends his limitations and enables him to reach out to the so-called ‘impossibles’. It expands his personality to the boundaries of success so that he can enjoy it peacefully.’ He conquered the Everest, flown through the sky or landed in moon only because he dreamt of it.<br />
<br />
Man could conquer Everest only because he constantly dreamt of it.<br />
<br />
Edmund Hilary as a young man always looked at the picture of Everest and said. “ Everest, You can not grow further, but I will grow beyond your magnificent weights and will conquer you one day”. He always dreamt of it and he realized it. <br />
<br />
Man could fly into the skies only because the two sons of a Bishop dreamt of it.<br />
<br />
In “ A Saviour of Seasons’, William Barker relates a story of a bishop from the East Coast (of America) who many years ago paid a visit to a small, Midwestern religious college. He stayed at the home of the college president. After dinner the bishop declared that the millennium could not be far off, because just about everything about nature had been discovered and all inventions conceived.<br />
<br />
The young college president politely disagreed. When the angered bishop challenged the president to name just one such invention, the president replied he was certain that within fifty years men would be able to fly.“ Nonsense” sputtered the outraged bishop. “ Only angels are intended to fly.”<br />
<br />
The bishop’s name was Wright, and he had two boys at home who would prove to have greater vision them their father. Their names were Orville and Wilbus. The father and his sons both lived under the same sky, but they did not all have the same horizon. People who have dreams are capable of changing the world into unimaginable realms.<br />
<br />
Man could land on the moon only because a leader inspired the whole nation to dream of it.<br />
<br />
On May 25, 1961, U.S President John F. Kennedy delivered an address to a joint session of the U. S congress. He fitted it “ urgent National Needs” and in it he made a breathtaking announcement: the United States would put a man on the noon and return him safely before the decade was out.<br />
<br />
It was both a race to beat an opponent and a challenge to achieve an impossible dream. When kenned mode his announcement, there were many in the space program who didn’t believe it was even possible. Yet in nine years later, the dream became a reality.<br />
<br />
Dreams possess immense power. The more important thing this: our personal dream of mission is influential in shaping the future of the world. We can touch the life of others with the dreams of our personal dreams. This is the communitarian dimension of dreaming positive.<br />
<br />
Martin Luther King proclaimed, “ I have a dream …” His dream was translated into powerful flow of hope and became the freedom for black community.<br />
<br />
Mahatma Gandhi had a dream of Self-reliant India. He traveled along the breadth and width of the country and created a personal dream about India. Millions shared his dream and it became freedom for India.<br />
<br />
While traveling in a train, a poor man had a dream- to serve the sick and to protect the abandoned children of Kolkotha. She became mother Teresa and a multitude of destitute enjoyed her care.<br />
<br />
The world’s most successful school drop out had a dream- to make computer a household necessity of the modern living. He became the richest man on earth- Bill Gates and a virtual global knowledge community emerged as a result.<br />
<br />
Such is the power of positive dreams. That is why Jesus initiated his mission with a great positive dream – the Kingdom of God. Besides being positive it was also big.<br />

<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%; text-align: justify;">
<span style="line-height: 150%;">Even though our researchers are doing wonders around the world, they
fail to produce the same research output in India. This is partially due to the
fact that we don’t have enough state-of-the-art technologies and facilities for
such world-class researchers. The progress and productivity of our native research
endeavors will be improved if our researchers have access to a supercomputer.</span><br />

<span lang="EN-US">FASTER WORK, MULTIPLE REWARDS</span><span style="line-height: 150%;"> </span></h3>
<div>
<span style="line-height: 150%;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%; text-align: justify;">
<span lang="EN-US">While working as a Computational Scientist in New Zealand, I had the
opportunity to work with Chris Jewel, a young researcher at Massey University.
His research was to find out the reasons of some commonly noted cattle epidemics.
Milk is to New Zealand what petroleum is to the Gulf countries. A country which
gets more rainfall than Kerala, and which is more verdant, New Zealand’s
economy is closely linked to milk production. However, epidemics in cattle are
a common occurrence. Chris Jewel was working on the cattle movements and how
the rotation of pastures may influence the spread of <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>cattle epidemics. For compiling and analyzing his
vast research data of millions of cattle movement, Chris Jewel had to rely on a
supercomputer set up by the New Zealand government at the University of
Auckland. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%; text-align: justify;">
<span lang="EN-US">Every rainy season in Kerala brings in its wake various epidemics
like the dengue fever, rat fever and monkey fever. We haven’t found out the
reasons let alone the solutions to such conditions yet. Our researchers are not
in a position to address these issues without proper research capabilities,
which may very well include the availability of a supercomputer. The
calculations that take months on the existing systems may require mere seconds
on a supercomputer. Imagine the rate at which preventive and eradication
measures can be implemented if we had the aid of a supercomputer.</span><br />
<span lang="EN-US"><br /></span></div>
<h3 style="line-height: 150%; text-align: justify;">
<span lang="EN-US">THE LIGHTNING SPEED OF SUPERCOMPUTERS</span></h3>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%; text-align: justify;">
<span lang="EN-US"><br /></span>
<span lang="EN-US">A supercomputer is a network of computers, which can process
multiple tasks simultaneously and at a higher speed. A huge building may be
required to house a supercomputer. A researcher may be able to access the
supercomputer from his laptop or his mobile through the Internet.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%; text-align: justify;">
<span lang="EN-US">At present, the world’s fastest supercomputer is the Tianhe 2
developed by the National University of Defense Technology, Changsha. Tianhe 2
has a speed of 32 petaFLOPS. 33 lakh crores (equivalent to 15 zeros after 30)
calculations can be done per second by this machine. In the top 500 list of supercomputers
in the world, India has got 12 in it. The supercomputer at Vikram Sarabhai
Space Centre, Trivandrum occupies the 279th position in the world.
Since this supercomputer handles defense related information, it would not be
advisable to make it available for other research purposes. This leads us to
consider the question of setting up a supercomputer for other purposes in
Kerala. The benefits it is bound to reap in the research sector are beyond our
imagination.</span><br />
<span lang="EN-US"><br /></span></div>
<h3 style="line-height: 150%; text-align: justify;">
<span lang="EN-US">EMULATING THE KIWI MODEL</span></h3>
<div>
<span lang="EN-US"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%; text-align: justify;">
<span lang="EN-US">New Zealand is a country with a population size of Ernakulam
district of Kerala. In New Zealand, the needs of the higher education sector and
research agencies are met by the supercomputer set up by the government through
an agency called New Zealand eSceince Infrastructure. We can implement a
similar model in Kerala. This is because a single agency or an organization do
not have research depth to have a supercomputer. Moreover, the expenditure to
set up one will not be affordable for a single agency or organization. The
supercomputer set up iat VSSC Trivandrum cost around 15 crores. </span><span style="line-height: 150%;">The government could utilize the taxes from professional colleges to
set up a supercomputer as a value added service to the people. It could also
collaborate with institutions and agencies willing to partner with this venture.
The Central Government’s declaration to set up a network of 70 medium-range supercomputers
within the next five years provides a condusive environment for such an
endeavor.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%; text-align: justify;">
<span lang="EN-US">With the right planning and implementation, a supercomputer can be
set up within a year and a half. Proficient researchers from the higher education
and research sectors could be given the opportunity to utilize this
supercomputer for free. IT parks, entrepreneurs, and industries could be given
access to the same at fixed fees. Thereby we will make history as the first
state in India to have its own supercomputer. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 150%; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>

<br />
<br />
An exceptional struggle is going at the heart of India at
the moment. I am not just talking about the anti-graft movement epitomized by
Arvind Kejriwal and his political antics, but which very well be a part of it. It is
the struggle of the <i>generation-X</i> to launch
itself to India’s center stage whether it is politics, cricket, business, film or
any other walk of life. It seems that they are already there but not yet!<br />
<br />
In short, the <i>baby-boomers</i>
still hold power in India and the <i>generation-X</i>
is yet to make its presence even though India is tipped to become the
world’s youngest country with 64 per cent of its population in the working age
group by 2020. (The <i>baby-boomers</i>
refer to people born after World War II (1945) and <i>generation-X</i> refers to people born after 1970s). This transitional
pain is aggravated in India, just like in any other Asian country, because of
the traditional cultural values that draw apparent links between seniority and
productivity, which may not be true all the time.<br />
<br />
This struggle is exemplified in Indian politics where we
have Narendra Modi on one side and Rahul Gandhi and Arvind Kejriwal on the
other side, as prime ministerial aspirants. <br />
<br />
<b>The Struggle</b><br />
<br />
The <i>baby-boomers</i> –
the post freedom generation of India – have used their opportunities well and
turned India into what we see today – a potential superpower that could take on
the world. They worked with less, maneuvered intelligently, reconciled
dichotomies and often created complex ways of wealth and prosperity creation tools.
They inherited a legacy from the freedom fighters and produced Ambanis and
Adanis along with shred but effective politicians. <br />
<br />
On the other hand, the <i>generation-X</i>
grew up in the shadow of the security and prosperity created by the <i>baby-boomers</i>. They had enough and were
never exposed to unhealthy competitions to the extent their predecessors were
exposed to. <br />
<br />
But now when they want to take up the mantle from their
predecessors, the <i>generation-X</i> faces
some stark choices and hard decisions. This dilemma is epitomized in Rahul
Gandhi, where he has inherited a legacy institution – Indian National Congress
–but with its huge baggage of recent history of corruption and mismanagement. The
organizational elements in his party still wanted to hold on to what they are
used to. But Rahul can easily see that this will not play well with the <i>generation-X</i> and the subsequent
generations. If Rahul really wanted to make his organization relevant and
competitive, he needs to change it for good. When Rahul says that he was
working to strengthen his party for the past few years, he means this
transition, for sure. <br />
<br />
The aspirations of
the <i>generation-X</i> have expressed
itself in the unprecedented anti-graft movements and anti-rape movements in
Delhi and elsewhere in India. As far as I can see, the <i>generation-X</i> in India dreams of a new world – they deliberately
wanted to part with the past. They like to enjoy the benefits created by the
baby-boomers, but wanted to move away from the perceived negativities
associated with its prosperity generation tactics. <br />
<br />
At the moment, Arvind Kejariwal occupies this free space in
Indian politics. How good the intentions of Rahul Gandhi are, it is almost impossible
for him to change the ways of his party in a short time, without the support of his senior organizational members. Arvind Kejariwal
presents a clear alternative and an easy way to part with old ways for the <i>generation-X</i>. It seems to be appealing
and practical, but how deeply he can dig is yet to be seen. Interestingly Rahul
and Arvind are in their early 40s. <br />
<br />
And still there is the other formidable force – the might of
the <i>baby-boomers</i> – represented by
Narendra Modi, who presents the vision of prosperity and stability, but by
mostly holding on to old ways. That is a tried and tested model and still
appealing to masses. <br />
<br />
<b>The Choice</b><br />
<br />
The question is, what will India choose, especially its younger generations, for now and in the future? <br />
<ul>
<li>Whether they will choose to keep the old ways of
winning at the cost of gravitating towards conservative values?</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>Whether they
will decide to part with the past to create <i>a
new sky and new earth</i> at the cost of relative instability and
experimentation? </li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>Whether they will be given a chance to renew
their legacy institutions to a winnable position, with the support of their
senior mentors in their organizations?</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>Whether they will go for an all-out reversal of
the system, if not now, later, if they feel that they are left out of
options? </li>
</ul>
<br />
Those choices will determine the shape and social fabric of
India for the foreseeable future that I can see. <br />
<br />
It will be interesting to watch the coming elections.<br />

<div style="margin-bottom: .1pt; margin-left: 0cm; margin-right: 0cm; margin-top: .1pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman"; font-size: 14.0pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;">Pope
John Paul II championed “Theology of Body”, which was the need of the time.
This initiative identifies that the “Theology of Internet” is the need of the
present and the future. <span style="color: #111111;">Pope Benedict XVI
identified social networks as the new ‘agora’ and therefore new spaces for
evangelization in his 2013 Message for the 47th World Communications Day. He
wrote: </span></span></div>

spontaneous affinity for the new means of communication, to take on the
responsibility for the evangelization of this ‘digital continent”. </span></div>

<span style="color: #111111; font-family: "Times New Roman"; font-size: 14.0pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;">Whenever we discovered a continent in the past, the church
always sent its missionaries. The role of those missionaries was to risk
formidable challenges to spread the Good News of Jesus, with great courage and
faith. In the same way, missionaries are needed to venture into this newly
discovered ‘continent’ of the digital environment and proclaim the Good News. </span></div>

<span style="color: #111111; font-family: "Times New Roman"; font-size: 14.0pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;">Success and sustainability of this new missionary movement will
depend upon the strength of the theological foundations on which this movement
is built. The collaborative blog - </span><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman"; font-size: 14.0pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;">theologyofinternet.com
– is intended to provide a platform to articulate and develop this new theology
of Internet, which will be an important part of the New Evangelization efforts
of the church. </span></div>

Last Sunday, I had a pleasant surprise to receive a call
from Fr Constantine. He was very relaxed and graceful as he is about to join
the Anglo-Catholic diocese of Ballarat. He conveyed his kind regards to all at
Corpus Christi. In chatting with him, he incidentally made a comment that he
went to Ballarat Cathedral for reconciliation the previous week before he joined the Anglican diocese and met an
Indian priest, who was a CMI. The first part of that comment really made me
happy, to see how he valued the merits of reconciliation – the sacrament that
has got a very special relevance in our lives, especially during this Lenten
season. <span class="text">The Catechism of the Catholic Church reminds us that
the “individual and integral confession of grave sins followed by absolution
remains the only ordinary means of reconciliation with God and with the Church”
(Article 1497). Let us receive this sacrament (first or second rite) this
season to merit the necessary grace to overcome our limitations and to
reconcile with God and with the Church. Let us also place Fr Constantine in our
prayers. </span></div>

parish and you all will continue to remain in my prayers (and in Facebook!). </span></div>

<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">In
his pastoral letter on </span><span style="font-size: small;">2013 World Communications Day, Pope Benedict XVI identifies social
networks as the new “agora” and therefore new spaces for evangelization<a href="http://www.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=4341141073503220448#_ftn1" name="_ftnref" style="mso-footnote-id: ftn;" title=""><span class="MsoFootnoteReference"><span style="mso-special-character: footnote;">[1]</span></span></a>.
Reflecting on this letter, Bishop Anthony Fisher says that Pope discovers a new
continent called “digital environment”. He commented on his Facebook p<span style="font-size: small;">age</span>:</span></span><br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 36pt; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span class="usercontent" style="font-size: small;">B16 just called social media "new spaces for
evangelisation" and the digital environment "a ‘continent’ where the
Church must be present and where believers must share with others the deepest
source of their joy and hope, Jesus Christ.</span><span style="font-size: small;"><a href="http://www.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=4341141073503220448#_ftn2" name="_ftnref" style="mso-footnote-id: ftn;" title=""><span class="MsoFootnoteReference"><span style="mso-special-character: footnote;">[2]</span></span></a><span class="usercontent">" </span><span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span></span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 36pt; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">The
Internet is the landscape of this new continent; the digital networks are its
super highways and the digital content, its resources. Netizens are its
citizens and its new “agoras” – the social networks – have turned in to super
cities or nations. Facebook had 1.06 billion monthly active users (MAU) as of
December 31, 2012<a href="http://www.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=4341141073503220448#_ftn3" name="_ftnref" style="mso-footnote-id: ftn;" title=""><span class="MsoFootnoteReference"><span style="mso-special-character: footnote;">[3]</span></span></a> making it
the 3rd largest nation on earth after China and India, and holds
more information about its netizens than any nation state about its citizens.
This new world is definitely a continent. </span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span></span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">Whenever
we discovered a continent in the past, the Church always sent its missionaries.
The mission of those missionaries was to venture into those unseen lands to
risk formidable challenges to spread the good news of Jesus, with great courage
and faith. This will be true to this newly “discovered” continent of “digital
environment”. There is a need for missionaries and missionary expeditions into
this new continent.</span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">What
should be the style of mission work in this new landscape? We can only look up to
Jesus, as we always do, in search of an answer. So the question can be
rephrased as “What would Jesus do in this new holy land? ” </span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">He would have gone
to Capernaum.<span style="font-size: small;"> </span>Capernaum
was the “agora”, Jesus chose to be in. There was a special significance and
intent in choosing Capernaum as the major field of Jesus’ public ministry where
he spent at least 18 months – half of his public ministry after his expulsion
from his hometown - Nazerath. It was almost premeditated, and of course
according to the Divine plan. It was THE major connecting town between Galilee
and Jerusalem<span style="font-size: small;"> - the Jericho Route which the Jews preferred to avoid t<span style="font-size: small;">raveling through Samaria</span></span>. Every person who travels between Galilee and Jerusalem had to
touch this town.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>It had the
largest synagogue in the region and a Roman military post. Jesus chose to heal
the servant of the synagogue official and the daughter of the centurion at the
military post. He chose to stay at one of the largest houses in that vibrant
city – of that of Peter’s mother-in-law. Jesus would have imagined that the
connectivity of Capernaum will simply ensure the proliferation of His good news
to reach up to the ends of the world - to Jerusalem, to Rome and beyond. The
important thing is to be at the crossroads and to saw the good news, just like

<br />
Lawrence B. Bean<br />
(1929 - 2013)<br />
<br />
Lawrence B. Bean (Larry) who gifted 238 acres of land to the Carmelites of Mary Immaculate to start the Carmel Spirituality Centre at Liberty, Tennessee, USA died on January 21, 2013 at the age of 83 at DeKalb Community Hospital in Smithville. According to his wishes, his body was cremated. A memorial Mass was celebrated by the director of the Centre Fr. Thomas Kalam, CMI on Wednesday, January 30, at 2:00 p.m. at St. Frances Cabrini Church in Lebanon, TN. The CMI priests of the Diocese of Nashville along with others concelebrated. His relatives and friends were present on the occasion.<br />
<br />
Larry had been ill for some time and was bedridden, essentially, for more than a year (since he broke his left hip on October 12, 2011). He remained at home; Bonnie, his wife, and co-founder of the Carmel Centre, was his caregiver. Up until the end, arrangements were made for nurses to visit him at home twice a week, and a physical therapist also came twice a week – not on the same days as the nurses. He was on oxygen fulltime. He was unable to stand up at all for the last week while at home; he was barely able to stand before that. He was taken to the hospital by an an ambulance on Sunday night, January 13, when he became very ill at home. They admitted him, and he expired just over a week later. He had that bad MRSA pneumonia, dehydration and other things going on, which overwhelmed him. He put up a very good fight for a such a long time.<br />
<br />
He was born in Washington, DC on November 11, 1929. His parents were the late Edwin Temple Bean, Sr. and Mary (a’Becket) Bean. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Mary Osborne. Survivors include his wife, Bonnie (Axley) Bean of Liberty; son, Lawrence B. Bean, Jr. (“Skip”) and wife Jill of Penobscot, ME; daughters, Cynthia Lee Bailey of Rochester, NY, and Pamela (husband Christopher Panfil) of Angola, NY; step-son, Christopher Brunetto of Seminole, FL; step-daughter, Angeline Brunetto Sprague, M.D. and husband Timothy Sprague of Christiana, TN; brothers, Edwin Temple Bean, Jr. (wife Susan) of Buffalo, NY, and Neil Bean (wife Patricia) of Wilmington, NC. He had five grandchildren: Katherine Lee Bailey, Silas Jude Panfil, Becket Alexander Panfil, Kendall Faith Sprague and Ethan Ray Sprague.<br />
<br />
Mr. Bean grew up as a young man in East Aurora, NY. He was a veteran of the U. S. Naval ROTC program while at Clarkson College, NY, where he obtained a Bachelors Degree in Civil Engineering. He was President of Conax Florida Corporation of St. Petersburg, FL, which produces life support systems for the U.S. Navy and Air Force. Mr. Bean was an avid reader and had worked as a Librarian in the Dowelltown and Liberty Library for 15 years. He was a member of St. Frances Cabrini Catholic Church in Lebanon, TN.<br />
<br />
Larry who was born Episcopalian became a Catholic mainly inspired by his fevent Catholic wife Bonnie and the good CMI priests they met, starting with Fr. Peter Akkapadickal, CMI. It was Father Cletus Plackal, CMI, who received him to the Catholic Church. The spiritual friendship between Larry and Bonnie and the early CMI's grew stronger and deeper. Larry and Bonnie were present at Kottayam for the beatification of Blessed Chavara. Impressed by the life of the CMI's they met, Larry and Bonnie decided to donate all they had to our Congregation to start a spirituality centre, which would impart the type of spirituality they were privileged to experience from them. <br />
<br />
They lived in a cottage on the Carmel Centre property and took care of the running and maintenance of the property, which Bonnie continues to do. According to the agreement they had with the CMI Congregation, we have the obligation to celebrate a Gregorian Mass for Larry. <br />

Dear Rev. Fathers and My Dear Brothers, <br />
<br />
Larry Bean, one of our great benefactors in the United States, passed away on January 21, 2013. Kindly find below a detailed obituary prepared by Fr. Thomas, Kalam, the director of our Centre at Liberty in Tennesee. Larry was a close friend of our Congregation and he worked tirelessly with Bonnie to run our Centre at Liberty which they donated to us many years ago. I take this opportunity to acknowledge with gratitude the great committed services of Larry for our Congregation. Let us remember to keep Larry in our daily prayers. I have known Larry for many years and I will miss his beautiful smile and loving friendship. May he rest in peace.<br />

<br />
<br />
It's the tale of two mugs, from the life of an ordinary Indian boy who swam to distant lands he never knew!<br />
<br />
The first one - the orange mug - reads "Delectable Caterer"! It
was presented to me by the lovely ladies - Betty, one of them, if I
remember correctly - at the kitchen of GNH (Greensborough Nursing
Home), an old age home near Bundoora, VIC.<br />
<br />
I treasure it as one of my precious gifts. On the last day of my work
as a kitchen-hand there, they surprised me with this mug and a song -
"He's a jolly good fellow..". I worked there as a kitchen-hand for an
year and a half, because I couldn't find a job as a priest in Melbourne,
but still had to pay my enormous international student fees at the
university. I was doing three jobs at the same time sometime while I was
doing my masters in IT at RMIT. One job at the nursing home as a
kitchen-hand, one at a religious shop as a teller and third as a tutor
at the university. That was a great adventure and a huge lesson in
humility. I cannot forget the support I received from CMI congregation,
back in Kochi and from the kind Carmelites (O Carm) in Melbourne, who
allowed me to stay with them. Also grateful to people like Thomas John,
Ann De Costella (of <a href="http://www.southerncrosschurchsupplies.com.au/" target="_blank">Southern Cross Church Supplies</a>- the mother Canberra's own legendary athlete Deeks!) and my good old friend Manoj
Antony who in the very first place lured me to Melbourne, to start this
adventure!<br />
<br />
The second one - the white mug - reads "Australian National
University". The day I submitted the hard-copy of my PhD thesis at the
university's exams office, the lady asked me "pen or a mug?". It's a
tradition to present the successful candidate with either of them and I
didn't have to think twice to answer - "A mug, please" - because I
knew the value of a mug.<br />
<br />
It was an amazing run. The minor thesis I did at RMIT fetch me two
technical papers and I was offered PhD scholarships at RMIT and ANU. It
was hard for me to leave Melbourne, but was happy to do research in
supercomputing at one of the best 20 universities in the world. The best
thing about my research - it was to help scientists to do their work
much faster and easier, the best a Catholic priest can offer to the
world. Its faith that fosters science and there's no Two, only One -
Advaitha. I had my own struggles - after an year and a half into my
PhD, I came to realize that the software I was working was not suitable
for the purpose. I literally had to re-engineer it from scratch -
nearly 20,000 lines of codes. Holy Code! Then the emergence of Cloud
Computing and successfully convincing my supervisor to change the
course of my research to accommodate this new technology into my work!
And now, here I am, with the two mugs! The PhD is through with all the
three examiners evaluating it positively, almost unconditionally. What a
run. And in this tale of providence, there emerges God - "Life of
Jai".<br />

<div class="MsoNormal">
I have travelled a bit over recent years, thanks to the
international technical conferences that I had to attend as part of my PhD work
and supported by generous ANU funding. I was impressed by history-laden Europe,
where every alley and stone has a tale to tell of centuries old, the wonder of
modernity in the US and Canada, the beautiful blend of the new and the ancient
in the streets of China, and the natural beauty of “God’s own country” – Kerala
(my home state!), where we can breathe God in the air. But nothing has left the
lasting impression that my recent visit to the Holy Lands has! The Bible came
to life as I walked the walk Jesus and his disciples did in those lands.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
After celebrating the first anniversary Mass for my brother
at home in September, I started a Holy Land pilgrimage. I was in a group of 50
and took my mum with me. We flew from Kochi to Amman, the capital of Jordan.
From Jordan, we entered Israel, then later from Israel to Egypt - all by road.
No flights to and from Israel can fly over Muslim countries which surround by
it. That is one of the reasons we enter through Jordan and exit via Egypt – but
they all are part of Holy Lands of the Bible. </div>

In Jordan we saw Mount Nebo, where Moses watched the
Promised Land, which he would never enter. It is a stunning landscape, claimed
to be the deepest valley in the world, where we could literally look to the
horizon to see the Promised Land (present day Israel). That was the “Moses moment”
for me where I felt how Moses felt thousands of years back. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Bit of Biblical
Geography</b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
To understand the Israel of Jesus’ times we need to be aware
that there were three major regions then – Galilee in the north, Samaria in the
middle and Judea to the south. Galilee is the place surrounding Lake Galilee
(Lake Tiberius and the sea of Galilee are all the same), where Jesus spent most
of his time.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Nearby are Nazareth,
Cana, Magdala, Mount Tabor and Capernaum, etc. Jerusalem is in Judea, which is
164 km from Nazareth.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Bethlehem
and Jericho are within 20-25 km of Jerusalem. It is amazing to learn that Jesus
did this walk of 160 plus kilometers between Galilee and Jerusalem three times
during his three-year public ministry with his group of friends, called apostles.
Jesus deliberately developed his ministry around these three great walks.
Samaria was the place of gentiles. Most Jews avoided travelling through this
part because they did not want to mingle with gentiles, but Jesus did, which
was revolutionary. That’s why we have the Bible story of the Samaritan women. </div>

travellers. The parental houses of Joseph and Mary are near Jerusalem. But they
settled in Nazareth in Galilee – perhaps for work. After Annunciation, we see
Mary visiting Elizabeth in a mountain village, Ein Karen, a picturesque village
near Jerusalem. Then Mary goes back to Nazareth. Then she returns to Bethlehem
for the census, which is few kilometres away from Jerusalem. It’s lot of
travelling for Mary. The only means of transport she could afford was a donkey!
It doesn’t end there as the Holy Family walks to Egypt, after Mary gave birth
to Jesus, through the Sinai desert, which would be somewhere between 200 to 300
kilometres, and returning to Nazareth after the death of Herod. </div>

<div class="MsoNormal">
One of the great surprises was the city of Capernaum, a city
near the north shore of the Sea of Galilee, in Jesus’ time. We would not have
gone to that place unless our guide, ‘Moses’, insisted. This is the city Jesus
lived in for almost 18 months during his public ministry – that is around half
of his public life. When we arrived we understood why Jesus chose to live in
that city. Readers may recall that Jesus was expelled from his hometown of
Nazareth (Luke 4) when he started his public life by saying that the Scripture
was fulfilled in Him. He moved to Capernaum. It was a major city from where the
road to Jerusalem began from Galilee. That meant that almost all the people
from Galilee had to go through this town for their annual pilgrimage to
Jerusalem and all merchants and other travellers from Jerusalem to the rest of
Galilee also passed through this city. There was not a better-connected place
than Capernaum in Galilee to spread the new message of the gospel for Jesus.
Moreover, Jesus selected his first disciples: Peter, Andrew, James and John
from this little town and found a home to hang around in Peter’s
mother-in-law’s house.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>The house
allegedly is still there in Capernaum.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>The city had the most prominent synagogue in the region and also a Roman
military outpost. The remains of the synagogue, which was built over the
foundations of the old one in the 4th century AD, is still there. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Jesus tried his level best to pursue its inhabitants to
convince them of his divinity. He raised from the dead the daughter of Jairus,
who was a leader at the Synagogue, and cured a servant of a centurion who was
stationed at the Roman post there. Also, he healed Peter’s mother in law at her
house and cured the paralysed man who was brought in through the roof of the
same house. It all came to life for me when we were there.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>We could feel how naturally these
things would have happened during Jesus’ time, but of course with great
disbelief and admiration from Capernaum’s residents. But interestingly Jesus
curses Capernaum towards the end of his life by saying that if he had done the
same to them as in Sodom and Gomorrah, they would have repented more (Luke
10).<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Sodom and Gomorrah are on the
other side of Jerusalem, on the way to Mount Sinai along the Dead Sea. It was
amazing how Jesus related these stories, which would have been part of the
folklore of Jews, even in Galilee, at that time. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">

<div class="MsoNormal">
<b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">A lot more</b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">

A lot more things would bring the Bible to life in the Holy
Lands during the remainder of the trip, for example, <span style="color: red;"><span style="color: black;">the
feeling the little cloud of prophet Elijah coming from the sea (1 King 18)</span> </span>as
we look from Mount Carmel to the sea in Haifa, Bethlehem and Calvary, the
passion tracks from Gethsemane to the very city of Jerusalem and the exodus trail from Egypt through mount Sinai. All these
experiences bring new meaning to what we read and contemplate in the
Bible.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span></div>

<div class="mbl notesBlogText clearfix">

<div>
Last Sunday marked the conclusion of the 13th Ordinary Synod of Bishops on “<b><i>the New Evangelization for the Transmission of the Christian Faith</i></b>”
in Rome. In his final address Pope Benedict noted “it (new
evangelization) applies, in the first instance, to the ordinary pastoral
ministry… to inflame the hearts of the faithful who regularly take part
in Community worship and gather on the Lord's day to be nourished by
His Word and the Bread of Life eternal.” It can be read as an invitation
to transform our parish activities, especially the parish life around
Sunday observance as instruments for the new evangelization. The list of
58 prepositions suggested by the Synod to the Holy Father gives us some
directions for the two-fold New Evangelization strategy of <i>kerygma </i>and
catechism. Kerygma means the initial proclamation of the good news and
catechism refers to the deepening of that experience in faith.
Traditionally, parishes tend to be strong on catechetical efforts. So,
the challenge of New Evangelization is to open new frontiers in
Kerygmatic proclamation of Jesus along with renewed catechetical
efforts. Synod suggests every parish to have a “Pastoral Plan of Initial
Proclamation” that “animate its members to become agents of the New
Evangelization, witnessing through both their words and their lives” as a
first step towards becoming a kerygmatic parish (Propositions 9 &
44). Meaningful celebration of the Liturgy, sacrament of reconciliation,
family visits, integrating migrants to parish community, parish
missions, parish renewal programs and parish retreats are some other
instruments proposed by the Synod (Propositions 21, 26 & 44). Let
this Year of Faith help transform us into an evangelizing parish.<br />

Jesus’ heart was pierced and came the last drops of blood and water –
a powerful imagery of Jesus’ love, God’s love - to us and to the whole
humanity. God loved the world so much that he gave his only son and His
Son loved the world so much that He gave even the last drops of water
and blood from His heart to the world, which became fountain of grace
flowing through the sacraments in the Church.<br />
<br />
St Paul encourages us “to comprehend the breadth and length and height and depth,<br />
of the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge”. The power of love is very well depicted in this short story.<br />
<br />
A MOTHER'S HEART <br />
There is an old tale <br />
About a boy, <br />
An only son <br />
Who fell in love with a lovely girl. <br />
`You don't love me, <br />
You never did,' said she to him. <br />
`But if you do, go then <br />
And fetch me your mother's heart.' <br />
Downcast and distraught <br />
The boy walked off <br />
And after shedding copious tears <br />
Came back to his love. <br />
The girl was angry <br />
When she saw him thus.And said, `Don't you dare come back again <br />
Without your mother's heart.' <br />
The boy went and killed <br />
His mother, and as he ran <br />
With her heart in his hand <br />
He slipped and fell. <br />
`My dear child, My poor child,' Cried the mother's heart, <br />
`Did you hurt yourself?'<br />
By Armenian writer, AVETIK ISAHAKIAN<br />
<br />
Jesus’s love is like the mother’s love. He loves even when it hurts and his love is compassionate.It gently, but powerfully invokes us to love and show kindness.<br />
Yesterday after 21 years after receiving the Nobel Prize, Ang San Suu Kyi – Burmeese democracy fighter – delivered her Nobel Prize acceptance speech. Suu Kyi used her speech to promote kindness and warned against kindness fatigue. It was an emotional ceremony, as you might have watched. She said:<br />
<br />
<b>"Of
the sweets of adversity, and let me say that these are not numerous, I
have found the sweetest, the most precious of all, is the lesson I
learnt on the value of kindness. Every kindness I received, small or
big, convinced me that there could never be enough of it in our world.
To be kind is to respond with sensitivity and human warmth to the hopes
and needs of others. Even the briefest touch of kindness can lighten a
heavy heart. Kindness can change the lives of people."</b><br />
<br />
It
is this kindness the mission of Christ and Church today in this world.
Church does that with great care, but many a time it can be
misunderstood. Going back to the story of Mother’s heart, the Church’s
heart would add something like this, I guess:<br />
<br />
`My dear child, My poor child, <br />
`Did you hurt yourself?'<br />
`You poor thing. Watch over! There are hurdles ahead.'<br />
<br />
That
attitude of concern also come from great love and care. One of those
issues would be that of the debate on marriage in Australia and this
week is very critical for that debate.<br />
As Peter Jensen – the Anglican Archbishop of Sydney noted: “There are some glossy slogans out there (like <i>marriage equality</i>),
but the difficulty with slogans is that they are not arguments and, so,
are hard to refute, except by slogans in return.” Unfortunately, Church
is not in the business of slogan writing. But we can just say with
great love and kindness that we value marriage – and the right of our
children to be born, raised and nurtured in a family atmosphere – with
the care and love of a father and mother.<br />
<br />
And we will be
remembering the contribution of such a wonderful parental figure in our
archdiocese this week – our retiring bishop Pat Power. We acknowledge
the love and kindness he has shown to all in our archdiocese and his
farewell Mass is on this Tuesday evening at the Cathedral. Let’s say
thank you to him.. and to the Sacred Heart of Jesus.<br />

<br />
“He is a great builder of the Church”, commented Archbishop Phillip Wilson (Adelaide) on <b>Archbishop Mark</b>
to me once. It sums up what Bishop Mark is. He leaves a great legacy
and solid foundations for the future as he leaves Canberra and Goulburn,
which he built on the good works of his predecessors. As Mons. Kevin
Barry-Cotter rightly pointed out in his farewell address in Cootamundra –
the greatest achievement of Bishop Mark was realizing the long-term
dream of a “Pastoral Institute” in <i>CatholicLife</i> at Rheinberger
Centre, Yarralumla. The successful Archdiocesan Assembly few months ago
and the follow-ups in setting up a mission model of pastoral care in
different centres will shape the future of the archdiocese, for sure.<br />
<br />
To
be Catholic means to be universal, which truly Bishop Mark is. He was
always at the heart of the Church – when he gave leadership to the
liturgical translations and frequently visited Vatican to be part of
various committees he is a member of – and we felt listening to the
orthodoxy of the Church whenever he delivered his eloquent and animated
homilies and addresses. He is a great teacher.<br />
<br />
He shared a
very special heart for the youth. The leadership he provided to the
success of WYD-Sydney and Days-in-the-Diocese prior to that was
inspirational. He inspired a new breed of youngsters to priesthood,
which resulted in a healthy number of seminarians and young priests in
the Archdiocese.<br />
<br />
We
wish him well and offer prayers for his
future ministries. </div>പുതിയ കേരളം പുതിയ ഭൂമിhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08131786618167798996noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4341141073503220448.post-54684135099361815022012-04-01T14:05:00.000-07:002012-04-01T14:05:47.126-07:00On Equity and Environmental Issues<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on"><h6 class="uiStreamMessage" data-ft="{"type":1}"><span style="font-size: small;"><span class="messageBody" data-ft="{"type":3}"> Thanks <a data-hovercard="/ajax/hovercard/user.php?id=541737666" href="http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=541737666">Shobin Mathew</a> for the<a href="http://blog.ancheril.net/?p=313" target="_blank"> post/blog</a>. But its good to use clean energy technologies as long as it dont hurt their economies. Any argument agaist that is to make poor poorer in the present world order. Peace and progress. </span></span></span></h6><h6 class="uiStreamMessage" data-ft="{"type":1}"><span class="messageBody" data-ft="{"type":3}"><span class="text_exposed_show"><span style="font-size: small;">I wanted to promote a campaign for Earth Hour, like "Keep a light Burning" during "Earth Hour" to keep those poorest masses in our minds and their right to develop. </span></span></span></h6><h6 class="uiStreamMessage" data-ft="{"type":1}"><span class="messageBody" data-ft="{"type":3}"><span class="text_exposed_show"> </span></span></h6></div>പുതിയ കേരളം പുതിയ ഭൂമിhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08131786618167798996noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4341141073503220448.post-31665401458847089122012-01-25T20:42:00.000-08:002012-01-25T20:42:54.788-08:00About the Nursing Uprising in Kerala<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on">Let me try to put things in perspective: Nursing profession got attractive among Kerala youth not because they thought that they will get great jobs in Kerala or to that matter in India. They were dreaming/aiming at working and migrating to abroad. That's why they took huge loans and studied in nursing colleges mostly outside Kerala giving hefty capitation fees. They just wanted jobs for 2-3 years in prestigious Kerala hospitals to get working experience. But now because of GFC and the impending GFC II, the would nursing market is coming down and our nurses are no more welcome in those countries as in the past (They just implement tough IELTS condition, etc, etc which our new nurses cant get). The nursing community realize the danger. They are stuck. Also our medical field/industry is growing at a phenomenal rate. Nurses see tha<span class="text_exposed_show">t. They want a share of it. Fair, but the effect will be rocketing hospital/medical fees/expenses in Kerala. No more cheap labor, which is good, but that will result in a situation medical assistance going away from the reach of poor masses in Kerala, in the near future. We can also expect a cut in the number of nursing positions in hospitals, which means lesser job opportunities for new nursing students and deteriorating nursing care in hospitals. What we need is a balance. Nursing should remain as a noble profession of serving and not to be considered as a profession to make money. At the same time improve the working and salary conditions of the nurses to just-wage levels so that nurses can continue this serving ministry with dignity. Feel free to express your creative responses. No abuse please.</span><br />

I was at bed and knew that it was an overseas call. Usually I never take those calls, because my friends and family overseas knew that I live in a different time zone and I like them to respect my time zone. But it started to ring again. I picked up the phone to hear that shocking news – my younger brother Lalson (36) had a silent cardiac arrest and he is no more. He was my only sibling and was working and living in Bahrain with his wife and two young children. </div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal">I couldn’t believe. I called Fr James at the Cathedral (a friend priest from Kochi, India) to come to Calwell presbytery and to verify the news. He verified the news. I cried. We did an “office for dead” at Calwell presbytery chapel. </div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal">It happened after lunchtime at Bahrain and was evening in Kochi. I instructed not to break this news to my aging parents that night and managed to get into a flight to Kochi. It was the most difficult thirteen hours of plane journey in my life. I prayed that my sister-in-law gets enough courage to bring Lalson’s body from Bahrain to Kochi, with his children. I reached on same day evening and the funeral was planned for next day evening. </div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal">When the news broke, it was devastating for my parents. My mother had to be taken to the hospital. </div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal">According to our customs (Syro-Malabar Catholic rite), the first part of the funeral ceremony is celebrated at the family house and then the body is taken to the church and then to the cemetery. It is more of a personal and communal event. There were around 1500 people gathered for the funeral including more than 50 Carmelite priests and nuns. It was an honour for me to officiate his funeral ceremony. But I could do it only with extra-ordinary grace and courage from above. </div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal">An official memorial service was conducted on the 7th day of death, according to our tradition. The Syro-Malabar curia bishop – Mar Bosco Puthur officiated that Memorial Mass and it was followed by a solemn vegetarian lunch (Sadya) for all 600 special invitees. I remained with my parents and the family of Lalson for the next 30 days, listening to their stories, sharing our grief and observing a fast with abstinence of non-vegetarian food and entertainments. I officiated a Holy Mass on the 30th day with my family and close relatives to mark the end of that fasting period. </div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal">A very special thanks to the parish community and Frs John and Peter who supported and prayed for my family and me all throughout these difficult times. It helps me to find new meaning in the mysterious ways of the plan of God in my life. </div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />

<div class="MsoNormal"></div><div class="MsoNormal">The past year was a kind of mixed bag - the Arab spring and
end of dictatorships in many countries were mixed with global economic woes,
centered-round Europe. Our personal life stories many not be too different. This
time is the best time to reinvent the ancient Christian spiritual tradition of
“examination of conscience” - to take stock of our deeds and actions. Let’s
find out some time to sit and relax, may be at the beach side (weather
permitting!) and to look back and evaluate our life – both materially and
spiritually. </div><div class="MsoNormal"></div><div class="MsoNormal">It’s also a time to look forward and to make new
resolutions. We may have dreams and wishes, like “I want to pass my exams this
year”. But a resolution is bit different where I would say that “I will devout
an extra hour everyday for study to pass my exams”. January 1st is
also the feast day of Mary - the Mother of God, who was prepared to put her
efforts to realize that title.
Luke chapter 2 verses19 and 51 show us how she <b>“treasured the
word and pondered it in her heart</b>" to respond concretely to the

<div align="center" class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: center;">Christmas Homily 2011</div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal">It’s Christmas and a little story for you. Once there was man in Europe who was decent, gentle and generous. But he felt Christmas as a lot of rubbish. “The whole business of Incarnation where God becomes man sounds crazy, it doesn’t make any sense to me”, he told his wife, who was a faithful churchgoer. It was Christmas eve and he wasn’t a Scrooge. So, he allowed his wife and children to go to midnight Mass. Soon after they left, it started to snow – it was a perfect white Christmas! But suddenly he heard some shattering noise at the living room windows. It was a flock of birds huddled miserably in storm, searching for shelter and trying to fly through his window. He felt sympathy – “after all it’s Christmas, I should help them.” He remembered the barn where the children’s pony was stabled. It would provide them a warm shelter. He went outside, opened the barn and invited the birds to come in. They wont come. He started to do all the tricks – switched on the light, put a trail of breadcrumbs, shooing them into the barn – but wont work. He was devastated. “I wanted to help these bloody ignorant birds” he said himself, “but they don’t get it. “And I can’t seem to think of any way to let them know they can trust me. If only I could be a bird myself for a few minutes, perhaps I could lead them to safety. . . .”</div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal">Just at that moment the church bells rang- the Christmas Mass. He stood silent for a while and then he sank to his knees in the snow. “Now I understand,” he whispered. “Now I see why You had to do it.” </div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal">And that’s why He did it – the Emmanuel – God is with us – so that we may understand, and be led to safety – for our salvation and for us to know the mind of God and to touch his kindness in human form. Now we got a model and example before us, who can perfectly communicate God to us. And God communicated Himself to us by being a part of family - father, mother and a child – Joseph, Mary and Jesus.. That’s why Christmas is a family celebration and also Christmas is a celebration of “family”. That’s the reason why we are supposed to enjoy a beautiful Christmas lunch with our family and friends around. Hope you all will have good time with Christmas gifts and Turkey tomorrow/today!</div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal">Let us also not forget the tiniest (and most insignificant) of our human family as we share Christmas joy with our dear and near ones. Let’s make sure that every child in our families gets a chance to be born from the very moment of conception in his/her mother’s womb, as Jesus could be born into our world. Let’s make sure that every child gets the warmth of a family with a father and a mother ensuring complimenting dimensions of parenthood, as Jesus was blessed with a family. Let’s make sure that every human being gets an asylum if they run away from persecution as baby Jesus did from King Herod and not to be perished in the sea.</div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal"> And after all JOY is putting J and O before Y. That is, Jesus, Others before You! Let’s allow Jesus to take the center-stage in our lives. Let’s love him – he is very cute in that manger on the crib and also in our hearts. Let’s also love others and put their needs before us. Let’s overflow our humanity with Christmas gifts to the marginalized and the poor – we could give generously to the Archbishop’s Christmas Appeal for charity today or to Vinnies or Caritas or others. By bringing JOY to others and ourselves, let’s join the party of Jesus’ birthday. Merry Christmas and safe travelling!</div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />

<div class="MsoNormal">Respected members of the faculty, students and ladies and gentlemen,</div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal">I am very happy to be here for this prestigious international summer school at China’s National University of Defense Technology, Changsha. I consider it as a privilege and as a great opportunity. I am sure that all participants of this summer school would also feel the same. </div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal">Let me introduce myself. I am <span lang="EN-US">Jaison Paul</span> Mulerikkal. I am doing Phd at the Australian National University, Canberra. I am an Australian resident and an Indian national. I am doing my Phd in High Performance Scientific Computing. My research is to solve scientific problems using “Service Oriented Approach (SOA)” with high performance results. In the past year or so, Service Oriented Approach has evolved itself into Cloud Computing. So the research has directed more towards using Cloud Computing platforms for High Performance Scientific Computing.</div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal">I heard about this summer school through one of the old students of NUDT – Ting Cao, who is presently doing Phd at Australian National University at our department. I looked at the flier (brochure) and the website of the summer school. I was thrilled to see the great line-up of distinguished international resource-persons coming for this summer school and the topics they deal with. Then I googled (searched internet) to find that NUDT has developed the world’s fastest super-computer in 2010. I thought these guys are awesome! I made up my mind, that I should be part of this great event. So, I am here and I am very glad to be here. </div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal">I am very happy at the services provided by the organizers of this summer school. They were very helpful from the very beginning and through out the process. They have provided us with necessary paper work for visa, airport pickup, good friends to assist at the hotel and at the university. Very well done and big thank you to all the organizers. </div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal">Myself, and all other participants of this summer school are looking forward to have a great academic experience for the next two weeks. I am sure that we will have a good time in learning, understanding and sharing our knowledge in High Performance Computing area, which will benefit the whole humanity for peaceful and harmonious living. </div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal">This is my first visit to China. To be honest, you have exceeded my expectations. A great civilization with very good infrastructure and peace-loving people all around. I hope to continue to enjoy the warm hospitality of Chinese people for the next two weeks to come. </div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />

uiHeaderTop"><div><h2 class="uiHeaderTitle"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small; font-weight: normal;">Last Tuesday, while speaking at the </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small; font-weight: normal;"><em>Guinness and God</em></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: small; font-weight: normal;"> event at Civic, Canberra, Archbishop Mark encouraged the audience (of mostly youngsters) to grow beyond the traditional good boy/good girl Christianity. He quoted James Cowen from his book “Journey to the Inner Mountain" in observing that we are “grown tired of [Christianity’s] entrenched moralism, its desire to mould people into some kind of polite entity devoid of the essence of poetry and extreme life”.</span></h2></div></div></div><div class="mbl notesBlogText clearfix"><div><br />
There is a danger for all of us to become just polite entities for many reasons. The disciples too had the same dilemma, soon after the death of Jesus. It was out of fear and uncertainty they faced in their life at that time. They lost the leader and the vision. They couldn’t see anything but darkness in front of them. So they just wanted to be polite and ordinary Jews or citizens. Except Thomas, none even dared to go out.<br />
<br />
There was need for something extraordinary - something that comes from the breaking of the threshold of grace. The grace of the resurrection bought that to them. The resurrected Christ allowed that grace to stay with them and that was the Pentecost. The grace of God - Holy Spirit – came to them and set them on fire. They became extra-ordinary men and women.<br />
<br />
We live in similar salvific times, where we expect the breaking of threshold of grace for a new Pentecost for many reasons, Archbishop Mark suggests I think. We need individuals who find the poetry and extreme life in the grace of God, in Holy Spirit for the <em>Next</em> <em>Big Thing</em> in the Church. We had St Francis of Assisi or St Anthony of Desert, when times demanded such outpouring of Spirit in the Church in the past. Let the Pentecost challenge all of us to respond to such big grace in our personal lives to live a life of poetry and extreme life in the Spirit.</div></div></div>പുതിയ കേരളം പുതിയ ഭൂമിhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08131786618167798996noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4341141073503220448.post-51299637624961193762011-03-10T13:14:00.000-08:002011-03-10T18:16:58.249-08:00How to listen the interview with me on Vatican Radio?<div class="mbl notesBlogText clearfix"><div><p>The interview will be transmitted on Vatican Radio on Friday, 11th March 2011 and re-transmitted on Saturday 12th March 2011. Thanks a lot to Fr William at Vatican Radio who interviewed me and to Fr Isaac Arickapillil CMI (Director, CIIS, Rome) who took initiative to put in on Vatican Radio.</p><p><strong>The easiest way is to access it through Internet.<br /></strong></p><p>Access the interview on the following link (Broadcast on Demand) and select "Malayalam".The audio is available in mp3 and real audio format.</p><p><a href="http://www.radiovaticana.org/in4/on_demand.asp"><strong></strong></a><strong><a onmousedown="'UntrustedLink.bootstrap($(this)," rel="nofollow" target="_blank">http://www.radiovaticana.org/in4/on_demand.asp</a></strong><br /></p><p>The interview will stay one whole day in the Vatican Radio site.
